Travel insurance is one of those things people buy in a panic at checkout, or skip and hope for the best. Here is a simple way to think about it.

The one question that decides it

Can you afford to lose this trip if you have to cancel? If canceling would cost you thousands, or a medical issue abroad would be catastrophic, insurance is worth it.

What it usually covers

Trip cancellation and interruption due to illness, injury, or a death in the family.

Medical emergencies and evacuation while you are traveling.

Baggage delay, trip delay, and missed connections.

Some plans cover cancel for any reason, but it costs more and has limits.

What it usually doesn't cover

Changing your mind because you found a better deal.

Pre-existing conditions unless you buy within a window, usually 10 to 21 days of your first deposit.

Fear of travel, unless you have a specific cancel-for-any-reason upgrade.

When we strongly recommend it

International trips, especially where your health insurance will not work.

Trips with big non-refundable deposits, like cruises, tours, and villa rentals.

Family trips where a stomach bug or broken arm could derail everything.

When you might skip it

A refundable domestic flight and a hotel with free cancellation. If you can walk away without losing money, you may not need it.

How to buy smart

Buy soon after your first deposit to get the best coverage. Compare the total trip cost, medical coverage limits, and evacuation limits. Read the exclusions.
