Do You Need a Passport for a Cruise?
Getaways by CCTC · October 13, 2026

This question causes more last minute panic than any other, so here's the clear version. Rules can change, so we confirm documents for every booking before you travel.
Closed loop cruises
A closed loop sailing starts and ends at the same US port. For those, US citizens can generally sail with a government issued photo ID plus an original or certified copy of a birth certificate. Most Caribbean, Bahamas, Bermuda, Mexico, and Alaska round trips from US ports fall in this category.
When a passport is required
Children
Kids under 16 on a closed loop cruise can typically sail with a birth certificate alone. If a child travels without both parents, bring a notarized consent letter. Border officers do ask.
Why we recommend a passport regardless
If a medical issue, missed ship, or family emergency means you need to fly home from a foreign port, a birth certificate will not get you on that plane. A passport turns a bad day into a solved problem. It's valid for ten years for adults and costs less than one excursion.
Timing and validity
Apply at least three to four months ahead, longer in spring. Many countries require your passport to be valid for six months beyond your return date, so check the expiration now rather than in March.
Passport cards
A passport card works for land and sea entry from Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Bermuda, but not for international flights. It's a fine supplement, not a replacement.
