GETAWAYS DESTINATION GUIDE
Six visitable islands, and each one feels like its own trip. The trick is matching the island to the vacation you're picturing, and that's exactly what we do. Here's our honest take on where to go, when to visit, and what it costs!
The easiest first trip. Waikiki for classic beach energy, the North Shore for surf towns, Pearl Harbor for history. Best dining and shopping in the islands, and the most flight options.
The honeymoon favorite. Road to Hana, sunrise at Haleakala, and resort areas like Wailea and Kaanapali that are made for slowing down. A lovely balance of adventure and beach.
The garden island, green and quiet. Napali Coast boat tours, Waimea Canyon, and some of the prettiest beaches in the state. Best for nature lovers and repeat visitors.
Volcanoes, black sand beaches, manta ray night snorkels, and coffee country. The most varied island, and a great pick for families who want more than a pool week.
April to June
Our favorite window. Warm, dry, calmer crowds, and better hotel rates before summer families arrive.
July to August
Peak family season. Book 9 to 12 months out for the best resorts and interisland flight pricing.
September to mid December
Quieter beaches and some of the year's best rates. A lovely time for honeymoons.
Mid December to March
Whale season and holiday demand. Beautiful, but book early and expect peak pricing around the holidays.
Oahu or Maui for most first timers. Oahu is the easiest with the most to do, and Maui is the pick for romance and resorts. If you have ten days or more, we often pair two islands.
For a week for two, plan on roughly $4,000 to $7,000 with flights, a nice resort, and a rental car, and more for luxury properties or peak dates. Interisland trips and suites add to that.
One island per week is the comfortable rule. Two islands in ten days works well. More than that and you'll spend your vacation in airports.
It's one of our most booked honeymoon destinations, especially Maui and Kauai. You get the far away feeling with no passport, no currency exchange, and easy flights from the mainland.
