Do I Need Travel Insurance?

The honest answer: it depends on what you'd lose if the trip fell apart, and on how far from home you'd be if something went wrong.

What it usually covers

Trip cancellation for covered reasons, trip interruption, delayed or lost bags, and medical care and emergency evacuation abroad. That last one is the piece most people underestimate.

Why medical matters most

Your health plan often does very little outside the country, and an evacuation from a ship or a remote resort can run into six figures. That coverage alone is worth the premium on most international trips.

When we'd buy it without hesitating

Cruises. International travel. Anything with a large nonrefundable deposit. Trips built around a fixed date like a wedding or a milestone. Travel with anyone managing a health condition, including a parent at home who might need you.

When you can skip it

A refundable domestic hotel weekend, a short drive trip, or anything where a cancellation would cost you very little. There's no harm in booking those direct, and we'd rather tell you honestly.

Cancel for any reason

It costs more and usually reimburses 50 to 75%, but it's the only version that covers a change of heart. Worth it when the trip is expensive and the plans are uncertain.

Buy early

Most pre existing condition waivers require purchase within 14 to 21 days of your first deposit. Waiting past that window quietly removes the coverage most people assumed they had.
