What All Inclusive Actually Includes

All inclusive is a marketing phrase, not a standard. Two resorts at the same price can deliver very different weeks. Here's how to read them.

Almost always included

  • Your room, all meals, snacks, and most drinks.
  • Non motorized water sports like kayaks, paddleboards, and snorkel gear.
  • Nightly entertainment, pools, fitness center, and the kids' club where one exists.
  • Taxes and gratuities at most Caribbean and Mexico resorts.
  • Frequently extra

  • Premium liquor, wine by the bottle, and specialty coffee at some properties.
  • Spa treatments, motorized water sports, scuba, and golf greens fees.
  • Airport transfers, unless your package includes them.
  • Some specialty restaurants, or a reservation limit on the good ones.
  • The questions that reveal the difference

Ask how many restaurants require reservations and how far ahead you can book them. Ask whether room service is included and what hours. Ask whether the swim up rooms and adults only sections carry a supplement. Ask what the resort does when it rains, because that's the day the difference shows.

    Adults only or family friendly

Adults only properties are quieter and more polished. Family resorts are livelier and built for kids. Some brands run both side by side on one property, which works beautifully for multigenerational trips where the grandparents want calm and the grandkids want a waterpark.

Room category matters more than star rating

At most all inclusives, upgrading your room category unlocks more than a nicer view. It can add a butler, reserved beach seating, an exclusive lounge and restaurant, and better booking access. Sometimes that upgrade is the best value on the whole property, and sometimes it isn't worth a dollar. We know which is which.
