Choosing Your First Caribbean Island
Getaways by CCTC · June 12, 2026

The Caribbean isn't one place. Islands an hour apart by plane can feel like different countries, and the one that suits your friend's spring break may not be the one that suits your anniversary.
Start with flight time
If you're leaving from the southern or eastern United States, the Bahamas, Turks and Caicos, Jamaica, and Cancun are short hops, often nonstop and under four hours. Aruba, Saint Lucia, and Barbados take longer and sometimes require a connection. On a five night trip, that difference is a real chunk of your vacation.
Then think about the water
If you're bringing young children or you're a nervous swimmer, calm water should outrank everything else on this list.
Match the mood
Weather, honestly
December through April is the driest and most reliable stretch, and it's priced accordingly. Late spring is a sweet spot for value with good weather. Hurricane season runs June through November, with the highest risk in September and October. If you travel then, book refundable where you can and take the travel protection seriously.
One more thing
The island sets the scenery, but the resort sets the week. We'd rather put you at the right resort on the second best island than the wrong resort on the first.
