Is an Overwater Bungalow Worth It?

It's the most requested room in travel, and for good reason. Waking up over a lagoon and stepping off your deck into warm water is exactly as good as it looks. Here's how to decide whether it's right for your trip.

What you're really paying for

Privacy, a view with no neighbors, and direct water access. On the best properties you also get a glass floor panel, an outdoor shower, and a deck that becomes your favorite room. What you're not necessarily getting is more square footage or a better restaurant than the beachfront rooms on the same resort.

You don't have to fly to the Maldives

Overwater rooms now exist much closer to home: Jamaica, Mexico, Belize, Panama, and Bora Bora each offer them, and the Caribbean versions cut a full day of flying off each end of your trip. For most travelers, that trade is worth taking.

The split stay trick

This is our favorite approach. Book most of your nights in a beautiful garden or beachfront room, then move overwater for the last two or three nights. You get the experience, the photos, and the memory without paying the premium for every single night. Many resorts will happily arrange it, and the move takes about ten minutes.

Who should skip it

Families with toddlers, anyone uneasy around deep water, and travelers who plan to be off exploring all day. If you'll only be in the room to sleep, put that money into a longer trip or a better itinerary.

Book it right

Ask which bungalows face the sunset, which sit at the far end of the pier (more privacy, longer walk), and whether the resort runs a shuttle. Those three answers separate a good bungalow from a great one, and they're rarely on the website.
