Royal Caribbean or Carnival: Which Cruise Line Fits You?

People ask us this one constantly, and the answer is genuinely not the same for everyone. Both lines are fun. They just sell different vacations.

The short answer

Choose Royal Caribbean for big ships, big activities, and a slightly more polished feel. Choose Carnival for a livelier, more casual crowd and a lower starting price. Neither is the fancy option, and that's fine.

The ships

Royal's newest ships are destinations on their own: water slides, ice rinks, surf simulators, and neighborhoods that make a sea day feel short. Carnival's ships are smaller on average and easier to navigate, which some families genuinely prefer.

Food

Included dining is comparable and good on both. Royal has more specialty restaurants and a stronger showing at the higher end. Carnival's included favorites (the deli, the barbecue, the tacos) beat their price point and are the reason people become loyalists.

Families

Both run excellent kids clubs by age group. Royal edges ahead for teens because there's simply more for them to do. Carnival wins for value when you're paying for four or five people in a cabin.

The real cost

The fare is only part of it. Drinks, Wi-Fi, gratuities, specialty dining, and excursions can add 40% or more. Carnival usually starts lower and stays lower. Royal often costs more but includes more on the newest ships. We price the whole thing, not the teaser fare.
