Your First Cruise: What Nobody Explains Beforehand

A first cruise feels like a lot until you've done one. Then it feels like the easiest vacation there is: you unpack once, and the hotel moves while you sleep. Here's what surprises most first timers.

Embarkation day has a rhythm

You'll be given a check in window, and it exists for a reason. Show up inside it and you'll usually be aboard in under an hour. Your cabin may not be ready right away, so carry a small bag with swimsuits, medication, and anything you need for the first afternoon. Checked luggage often arrives outside your door hours later.

Dining is a choice you make before you sail

Most lines offer either a set dining time with the same table and servers each night, or open dining where you eat when you like. Families with young kids often prefer the early set time. Couples usually prefer flexibility. Specialty restaurants carry an extra fee and book up early, so reserve the ones you care about as soon as your booking window opens.

Port days go faster than you think

You'll often have six to eight hours in port, and that includes getting off and back on the ship. Pick one or two things rather than five. Shore excursions booked through the cruise line cost more but guarantee the ship waits for you if your tour runs late. Independent tours cost less and give you more freedom, and we'll tell you honestly which ports are fine to explore on your own.

What's included, and what isn't

Drink packages are worth it for some travelers and a waste for others. The math is simple: count what you'd realistically drink in a day, including sodas and coffees, and compare.
