Greece for First Timers: Athens, Islands, and the Best Two-Week Trip
Getaways by CCTC · August 26, 2026

Greece is the trip people dream about for years. White villages, blue domes, ancient ruins, and the best salads of your life. Here is how to do it well the first time.
Start in Athens
Two or three nights is enough. See the Acropolis, the Plaka neighborhood, and the Acropolis Museum. Fly into Athens and out of another island if you can, to avoid backtracking.
Pick two or three islands, not six
The classic first trip is Athens, Santorini, and one more island. Naxos is family-friendly and affordable. Mykonos is lively and upscale. Crete has beaches, mountains, and ancient history.
Santorini: worth it, but know what you are getting
The sunsets are famous for a reason. Stay in Fira or Oia, book a hotel with a view, and make dinner reservations early. It is busy and expensive, but it is unforgettable.
Ferry or flight?
Ferries between islands are scenic and part of the experience, but they eat half a day. Domestic flights save time and often cost less than you would think. We book both and tell you which makes sense for your route.
When to go
Late April to early June and September to mid October are ideal. July and August are hot, crowded, and expensive. Many shops and restaurants in smaller islands close in winter.
Practical tips
Athens to the islands is usually cheaper and faster by flight than by ferry.
Book hotels with views at least six months ahead for summer.
Pack comfortable walking shoes. The cobblestones are real, and they are not heel-friendly.
Learn a few Greek words. Yassas and efharisto go a long way.
