The easiest big vacation we plan: short flights, every budget, and resorts that genuinely deliver. But Riviera Maya and Los Cabos are very different trips. Here's how to pick your coast!
Where to go in Mexico
Riviera Maya and Cancun
The Caribbean side: white sand, calm turquoise water, and the biggest choice of all inclusive resorts anywhere. Easy flights from most of the US, and great for families and groups.
Los Cabos
The Pacific side: desert meets sea, dramatic rock formations, and a slightly more grown up feel. Stunning resorts, whale watching in winter, and some of the best food in Mexico. Note that most beaches aren't swimmable.
Puerto Vallarta and Riviera Nayarit
A real town with a resort coast attached. Cobblestone streets, great restaurants, jungle covered hills, and resorts that cost less than Cabos for a similar feel.
Cozumel
The diver's island. World class reefs, a relaxed little town, and easy pairing with a Riviera Maya stay.
When to visit Mexico
December to April
The driest, sunniest months and the most popular. Book early for holidays and spring break.
May to June
Warm, quieter, and better priced. One of our favorite times to send couples.
July to October
Hottest and most humid, with the best rates of the year. Sargassum seaweed can affect some Riviera Maya beaches in summer; we'll steer you to resorts that manage it well.
November
A gentle shoulder month before the holidays. Great value.
Questions we hear most
Riviera Maya or Los Cabos?
Riviera Maya for swimmable beaches, families, and the most resort choice. Los Cabos for scenery, food, and a more grown up vibe. If the beach itself is the point, go Caribbean side.
How much does a Mexico all inclusive cost?
For a week for two, roughly $1,800 to $3,500 at a comfortable four star resort, $4,000 to $7,000 at a luxury property, and more for swim up suites or butler level rooms. Flights are often the cheapest of any international beach trip.
Is Mexico safe for tourists?
The resort areas we book, including Riviera Maya, Los Cabos, and Puerto Vallarta, welcome millions of visitors a year and are considered safe for tourists. We share the same common sense guidance we'd give for any international trip.
Do I need a passport for Mexico?
Yes. US citizens need a valid passport book to fly to Mexico. Make sure it's valid for your full travel dates, and we recommend at least six months of validity beyond your return.
